Why I Love Group Fitness in a Small Town

  • I get paid to work out. Could there be a better incentive to exercise. I mean, as much as we like to deny it, $ really is the great motivator. There is no way I would have rolled out of bed to brave the 50 below weather for a 6:00 AM workout if there wasn't some form of payment involved!

  • Watching people in the mirrors. People think mirrors are bad, but when used to watch others, they can be a great entertainment tool. The actual purpose of the mirrors if for me (the instructor) to watch your form. I also use it to monitor the intensity of the workout. I watch how hard people are breathing and how much they are sweating. Is their face turning beat red? It's also great for people to watch me. Watch my foot placement, my posture, etc. But the fun part is watching their expressions. I teach a hip-hop aerobics class and watching people try to hip and hop is the funniest thing. The moves are simple and everyone can do them, but there is just something about hip-hop that brings out the facial expressions. Especially on the Big Butt/Big Gut move.

  • I've made some great friends. Who knew that you could meet such amazing friends in an aerobics class. I have met such a fascinating variety of people, and I have learned so much about life from them all. I have people in my classes ranging in age from late teens to early 70's. The conversations that happen during cool down of a kickboxing class can be mind blowing!

  • I get to act like an idiot and people think it's cool. Well, maybe they are just laughing at me, but at any rate it's a great time. I sing, I shake, I say off the wall comments that embarrass people. Seriously...it's a good time.

  • The Up-Beat music. OK, I do have to buy the music and it's not cheap, but there is nothing like the beat of a good aerobics CD to get you moving.

A friend just sent me this old picture of Rylee and her friend Emilia taking a nap. It's so bitter sweet. That's my baby and she's so grown up now. Time really goes to fast. This picture was just another reminder to slow down and enjoy life. Read, laugh, and play with your kids. Time truly does fly!

Weather Complaints...Again

Partly Cloudy and Windy
-20°F Feels Like -52°F

Yes, that is the weather today. Yesterday it was 35 above. That's almost a 90 degree temperature difference in less than 12 hours. I'm moving to Jamaica.

A friend just sent me these pictures from a performance last week. I thought it was fun because I never get to take pictures during performances. Nice kicks girls!

Aha Moment

Ever have one of those?

I have been singing Yankee Doodle for the past 4 days and I couldn't figure out why. I wake up in the middle of the night with Yankee Doodle running through my head. I find myself humming it while I'm working out. I don't generally listen to American Folk Tunes, so I've been baffled as to why this song is in my head. Well, today Brooklyn was practicing guitar and all of a sudden I find myself singing Yankee Doodle again. Aha...Brooklyn has learned to play Yankee Doodle and I have grown so accustomed to her practicing that I didn't even notice what song I was hearing! This is one of those moments when I say to myself, "Time to pay more attention."

On another note, my friend Anna's quote on her e-mail is "Let's not forget to be silly today." That is going to be my New Years resolution. A little bit of silliness everyday will definitely make the world a better place. And if not better, at least funner.

New Years Resolution Season

Yes, it's that time of year again, when we in the health and fitness industry see an influx of new or returning clients determined to make this the year they will change their weight, body fat %, health, attitude...life. It is so crazy busy at my little gym that I rarely have time to go the the bathroom let alone eat. I've taken to bringing prepared snacks and meals that I can eat while I work with clients (cut fruit or veggi's, fiber bars, sandwiches or wraps). Those who know me well know that if I don't eat something every couple of hours, I turn into a raging, hypoglycemic, witch! This yearly surge of business got me thinking about all the misconceptions people have about weight loss or fitness in general. So here are some of the top fitness mistakes and misconceptions that I have dealt with in the last couple of weeks.

  • Target weight loss. i.e. I need to lose 15 pounds in my stomach (or butt, or thighs, or arms, or boobs. Yes, I seriously heard "boobs" today.) Unfortunately, we don't get to pick where the weight comes from. You cannot go to the gym and do 500 sit-ups and nothing else and expect to have a Victoria's Secret model stomach. Just doesn't work that way. No matter how many sit-ups, or lunges, or squats a person does, if you don't reduce the body fat, you will never see the lean and sculpted muscles you have developed. Case in point...myself! If you were to push on my stomach, you would first feel a layer of soft, gushy skin and fat. But underneath that I have abs of steal. I do so much core work that I seriously have super strong abdominal muscles. But I eat too much and so I will not be sporting a 6 pack to the pool anytime soon.

  • Exercise alone will get you the body you dream of. Seriously, you cannot eat brownies and ice cream 3 times a day and then jog for 1/2 an hour and expect to see weight loss. You have to eat healthy foods. Foods that give you energy. Foods that build muscle. And you have to eat in moderation. Weight loss is about calories in-calories out. If you burn more than you consume, you will loose weight. That being said, you still have to eat. If you don't eat, you will not have the energy to get through your day, let alone your workout. Just make sure you have a well balanced diet, and you eat everything in moderation.

  • Cardio exercise is not the cure all. Strength training is essential. Building muscle brings plenty of benefits, including: increasing endurance and flexibility, protecting your joints (reducing your injury risk), increasing bone mass (which helps prevent fractures and degeneration from osteoporosis), increasing your energy level, and boosting your metabolism. Research shows those who followed a strength training program for two months burned, on average, about 200 calories more per workout than those whose exercise regimen did not include strength training. The benefits of strength training even continue when you're at rest. Your metabolism stays raised even if you are inactive. Strength training doesn't have to mean hitting the weights with the "meat heads" and seeing who can lift the most weight. You don't have to be grunting and groaning and ripping muscles to pieces. Take a Pilates or Power Yoga class. Try some kickboxing. Do some old fashion push-ups, crunches, lunges, pull-ups. There are many ways to build muscle.

  • This is one I hear a lot. "I want my legs to look like Jessica Simpson." or whoever. Or "I heard that Fergie walks at an 8 incline for 1/2 hour a day and that's all the exercise she does." Give me a break. First, don't believe everything you read. Second, none of us will ever have legs like Jessica Simpson, simply because we are not Jessica Simpson. We are all built differently. Proportions are different on ever single body. There are things we can all do to look the best we can with what we were given, but quit this stupid fascination with looking like some crazed image of perfect.

  • Here's another one I hear lately. First let me say that it is vacation season in North Dakota. It's so cold, so everyone plans these beach vacations for Feb. or March. So come January, the decide to hit the gym to get ready to wear a swim suit. They will honestly walk in and say "Nicole, I need to lose 40 lbs. by Feb. 20." What! This is not the Biggest Loser people! In real life we are not working out for 8 hours a day and letting someone control every bite of food that enters our mouths. It's is not healthy and weight will not stay off (if you are even able to lose it that quickly) when lost at that rate. Change your lifestyle. Don't expect miracles. Be realistic. 2-3 lbs a week is a great rate to lose weight. I you have an occasion you want to lose a few pounds for, don't wait till 1 month before. I'm getting swimsuit ready for June in October. Overnight transformations just don't happen naturally.

Basically I believe in Balance. In all things. Mind, Body and Spirit must all work together to achieve maximum success. Educate your mind, use your body, and nourish your spirit. If we are out of balance in anything, the ripples effect Everything.

Thank your for letting me rant and rave. I could go on and on with the crazy things people say, but it's time to eat! Don't want my family to pay if I don't feed my stomach!

Landon

I was looking back at some old pictures and everywhere I look there are pictures of Landon. Thought I'd post some fun ones. You can't even imagine how many I have of him with my kids that are not digital. This collage would be ENORMOUS! My kids consider Landon family. As a matter of fact, the other day Brooklyn had the brilliant idea that Chandra and Skyler could get married and then Landon would really be their cousin. Nice idea Brookie, but I don't see that happening. Besides, friends are the family that you get to choose.

Global Warming

Global Warming has come to a screeching halt up here. Our two week respite has ended with a vengeance and we are back to never leaving the house with any skin showing. I may even start wearing goggles to get the mail.

Happy Place

When you call my friend Carla, you don't hear ringing. You hear the song "Don't Worry Be Happy". If she doesn't answer, her voice mail message says, "I'm at my Happy Place. I'll call you when I get back." For some reason, that message got me thinking today. Where is my "Happy Place?" I decided that I don't have a "Happy Place". I have many happy places! Here are 10 favorites...in no particular order:

  • Snuggling with my girls. Sometimes on Sunday's, the girls and I lay on my bed, read a few chapters of a book and then take a nap. I love it. I have to trick them into the nap part, but once they are asleep, the house is quite and I just stare at their beautiful faces and I know I'm in the happiest place.

  • Lake Powell. As far back as my memory goes, this is one of my most happiest places. The majesty of the canyons, the heat penetrating to your bones, the smell of the boats, and so many wonderful memories with my family and friends. A sandwich never tastes as good as it does at Lake Powell. You never feel more comfortable in a bathing suit as you do at Lake Powell. And I am never more in awe of Gods creations as I am at Lake Powell.

  • My dads kitchen, early in the morning. Everyone else is still asleep. Dads making me some french toast (or Papa Toast as my kids call it) and we are just talking. We talk about important things and trivial things. Some book he or I have read that we think the other would enjoy or learn something from. Whats going on in my life, my brothers lives, my friends lives, his life, his friends lives etc. We analyze peoples relationships and decisions. We think so much alike and its such a great place to be.

  • On my mom's back porch. Feet are up warming by her awesome fire pit. The kids are playing on the swings or chasing Papa Brick and my mom and I are just relaxing. I love to watch my mom watch my girls. I have the most amazing mom, and when she is watching and listening to my girls my heart just swells. They bring her so much joy and I'm so lucky that she is such a great Grandma.

  • In my husbands arms. It's so nice to know that at the end of the day, after I have nagged, and burped, and farted, and stuck my freezing hands on his warm stomach (seriously, that one never gets old) he still loves me. Despite the gray hairs, the wrinkles that just keep cropping up, the cellulite that develops no matter how many aerobics classes I teach, he still loves me.

  • Brownies. Still hot. Dripping and melting their way down your throat.

  • A hot bath and a good book. As I've stated in previous posts, that's one happy place I can gladly spend hours in.

  • Dance performances. The girls are giddy and nervous. I'm sweaty and nervous. They have worked so hard. I have worked so hard. They pull off an amazing performance and are so proud of themselves. The look of satisfaction on their faces after a job well done. That's a good place.

  • In the mountains. Oh how I miss the mountains. It's so beautiful here. The endless fields of wheat, flax, sunflower. The sweeping view of miles and miles of gorgeous farmland that you can see from just the slightest rise in the earth...but oh how I miss the mountains. I miss the clean smell of pine trees. The sound of water rushing down a steep slope. The thin, clean air assaulting your lungs. The sharp contrast from mountain to valley. Salt Lake City is set in the most beautiful country on earth.

  • On the water. I love water. Whether it's canoeing, boating, swimming, splashing or soaking, I just love the water. I feel so at peace watching the ocean waves crash into the sand, or watching the sun set from our boat. I just love water. It's also my favorite drink!

Getting Sidetracked

It's amazing how quickly I get sidetracked. Right now for instance, I came to the computer to look up some information about Rocks for our Girl Scout meeting tomorrow. Reading about rocks reminded me of my dear friend Treasure. Treasure is a friend I can have the deepest, most off the wall conversations with. Several year ago, Treasure and I (and several other friends) were at Lake Powell on a mini-vacation. We were all goofing around on a beach and Treaz and I decided to swim across the channel and see what the other beach looked like. So we sit across the channel from all our friends and have at least a 45 minute discussion about rocks. We were sitting with our legs in the water, picking up chunks of sand and rock, discussing which came first...sand or rock. Did the rocks erode and make the sand? Or did the dirt petrify and make the rock? When god created the world, did it start as sand and then harden into rock, or the other way around? Or maybe some of both. Well, we never came to a conclusion, but the discussion took us on some very interesting religious twists and turns. So today as I read about rocks, I think about Treasure...and what a Rock she has always been in my life. Right now I thank God that he made her such an amazing person. So strong...there is no way this crazy world will ever erode her strength, her character, her love, or her faith. She is an exemplary woman and I am so blessed to call her my friend. Now getting back to rocks...Treaz, here's the best answer I could get.
Grains of sand are really very tiny particles of rock. It takes time and certain kinds of weather to turn rock into sand. Rain, frost, and wind can do the job. At beaches, the tide hitting against the rocks forms sand. Salt water, too, forms sand by dissolving minerals in the rocks. http://www.bigsiteofamazingfacts.com/where-does-sand-come-from
P.S. The picture above is of Treasure on the afore mentioned Lake Powell trip. She's so cute!

Weather

I just don't get the weather up here. Maybe it's Global Warming, but all through Nov. and Dec. we only had a couple of days above 0 degrees. Now it's January and we're in the high 20's and 30's. I realize that in some parts of the country that is still consider pretty darn cold, but up in the frozen Northern Tundra's, we take off the parka and head outside for a walk. Anyway, just had to say that I'm thankful for days that are above freezing and without a wind chill. Living in UT I thought freezing was freezing, but I now know there are many more degree's to freezing, and most of them start with 4 letter words!

Do not regret growing older.

It is a privilege denied to many. ~Author Unknown

That is what I try to remind myself as I pluck grey hairs from my head today. What is going on here? I'm only 29! OK, logically I realize that this is how things go, but somehow I never really thought it would happen to me.

Brooklyn's Turn!

Tonight my Mini Kix (4th and 5th grade) performed to Whats Going On. We had some music problems at the beginning, but the girls hung in there and did a great job. This was Brookie's first performance for the year. She will have her first competition in March.
