Orval Lewis Baker (A.K.A. Grandpa) ~ Nov. 4, 1925 - Feb. 10, 2009

Orval Lewis Baker passed away peacefully Feb. 10, 2009, in Yuma, Ariz.

Orval was born Nov. 4, 1925, in Pocatello, ID. He enjoyed much happiness with his parents, Orval J. and Bernetta, and brother, Bob. Orval truly had a zest for life. During his years at Tulane University, he developed a love for football, which continued throughout his life. He later continued his education at Idaho State University. Orval enjoyed many sports and had many talents. He was especially passionate about fly-fishing, skiing (both snow and water), hunting, knife collecting and his beloved horses and dogs. Orval loved music and enjoyed playing the violin.

Orval was very charismatic. He had a charm that shined through whether he was telling one of his "famous" stories, sharing an outdoor adventure or looking through his knife collection and photo albums with friends and family. He had a special gift of making things fun and always put family, friends and relationships first. During World War II, Orval served his country with pride and honor. His love of America and its freedom was unwavering.

Orval had four children with his first wife, Beatrice Lloyd Baker (they were later divorced) -- Dale (Susan), Leanne (Dan), Danette (Steve) and Georgette (Brick). He later married Louise Teiser Anderson, and her six children -- Bob (Susan), David (Lee), Donna, Bill (Kathy), Fred (Kim) and Tom (Lisa) -- became his children too. All his children, 23 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren brought him much joy and happiness. All are grateful for the lessons he taught each of them. Orval was preceded in death by his parents; son, Dale; and daughter, Leanne.

A memorial service for Orval will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 28, at the First Presbyterian Church, 325 Elm St. in Idaho Falls. Visitation with the family will start at 10 a.m. Orval has been forever thankful to Shriner's Hospital, where his children, Dale and Leanne, received care. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Shriner's Hospital, 1275 Fairfax Road, Salt Lake City, UT 84103
